The official announcement of the final route took place on Tuesday 20 October at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. The defending champion Chris Froome said after the event that he expected the course to suit him better than last year's course. "I think it's going to take a complete cyclist – but the stage that certainly stands out for me is Mont Ventoux." he added.〔

The route for the 2016 Tour de France was unveiled by race director Christian Prudhomme on 20 October 2015 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. It contained two time trial events, both of which were individual. The organizers divide the remaining nineteen stages into three categories: flat stages, medium mountain stages, and mountain stages. There are five mountain stages, four of which have summit finishes: stage 9, to Andorra-Arcalis; stage 12, to Mont Ventoux; stage 17, to Finhaut Émosson and stage 19, to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. The organizers chose to include two rest days. When compared to the previous year's race, the race is longer, contains the same number of rest days, one additional individual time trial and no longer includes a team time trial.
